Text On A Curve

(by April Diamond)

I hope you find the following tutorial helpful. If you do, you might want to and let me know. (Or share something you've made, which would be fantastic!)

(Or maybe you have an idea for a tutorial you'd like to see me tackle in the future? Let me know...)

Have fun!

TEXT ON A CURVE

Want to try creating text on a curve?

I ended up with this:

curved nick icon
It's really not hard to do!

Here's how I do it...

  • Open PSP7.

We're going to do this for an icon, but you can do it for any size (or shape) image!

  • Open a new image, 100 x 100 pixels, transparent background (16 Million colors).
  • Now select the Draw tool.
  • On your color palette, set the Foreground (stroke) to black and the Background (fill) to Null (off).
  • Open your Tool Options palette. (Click the toggle button on the standard toolbar or go to View-->Toolbars... and put a checkmark by tool options and click the Close button.)

    You want these settings:
    Freehand
    Width: 1
    Antialias: checked
    Create as Vector: checked

  • Now use the draw tool to draw a wavy line on your image. (Don't worry if this takes practice. LOL. It's cool.)
  • Now change your Foreground (stroke) to Solid, white -- and your Background (fill) to black. (Or you can just turn off your Foreground color, if you want.)
  • Click on your text tool. You need to move your cursor over the wavy line until it turns into an 'A' with a curved (smile-like) line under it. When you see this symbol, click one time.
  • This will open your text box so you can type your text. I used Comic Sans for the font, set at size 12. But you can play with these, of course.

Be CERTAIN that 'Create as Vector' is selected!

  • You should now see your text sitting on top of and following your line!
  • To remove the line under your text, open your Layers palette. (Either go to View-->Toolbars... Checkmark by Layer palette and close OR click the button that toggles the layer palette on and off.)
  • Then you want to click on the + (plus) symbol you see beside Layer 2. It will turn into a -(minus) symbol.

    one

    two

  • Click on the glasses symbol in the Freehand layer to turn it off (you'll see a red 'x' on top of the glasses).

    three

  • Now go to Layers-->Convert to Raster layer.
  • Then go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge Visible.
  • You can now apply this to your icon image. Copy it and Paste as new layer. Go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge all (flatten).
  • You're now ready to Save!
  • If you also want to Save the text separately, be sure to do so in the Paint Shop Pro (.psp) format.

That's all there is to it!

Wasn't that simple?
